Gatwick, the centre for Asia Pacific Aviation
While Stansted has a perfectly functioning infrastructure, GIP committed to investing GBP1 billion at Gatwick and it has already paid dividends with both Air Berlin and AirAsia X shifting services there from Stansted. Air Berlin has already achieved a 31% year-on-year traffic gain since the move. As several long haul airlines have already made a similar move and benefitted from it, AirAsia X’s results will be highly anticipated. If they are markedly better at Gatwick that could spell the end for Stansted’s aspirations in the long haul segment.
easyJet is to launch flights from Southend Airport in Essex
The low cost airline is moving 3 aircraft from Stansted and redeploying 150 staff as it attempts to win customers and cut costs.
